STARTING TO ICE SKATE
A question often asked is, "How old should a child be before learning to ice skate?" To find an answer, this question was put to leading instructors of ice skating throughout the country.
The instructors replied that, on the basis of their experience, once a child has learned to walk well, a child can be taught to ice skate, but very young children require special classes limited to their age group.
They also agreed that a child must be able to take directions and that instructional periods for the preschool skater must be short because the child has a very limited span of attention. They also pointed out that instruction must be given in an atmosphere of fun rather than along formal lines.
As a result of the increasing interest in the preschool programs, a series of testing guidelines for Tot 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been developed. |
